Hydro Group celebrates 30 years of excellence

Aberdeen-based Hydro Group Plc celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. Having attained this remarkable achievement and survived a few recessions, Hydro Group Managing Director Doug Whyte said the secret of their success was ‘staying relevant in today’s global market’.

Hydro Group, Hydro Bond Engineering and Hydrocable Systems design and manufacture underwater harsh environment electrical and optical connectors, penetrators and cable assemblies to provide power and data into a wide range of applications. Customers are national and international, in industries as diverse as defence, oil and gas, energy, marine research, geological survey and aerospace.

Doug Whyte, CEO of Hydro Group, founded Hydro Bond Engineering in 1982 with a small team of engineers and work was initially concentrated in the oil and gas sectors, producing subsea mateable connectors. Quality was the priority for the company; in record time approval to what is today BSEN ISO 9001/2000 was achieved and has remained in place for many successful years.

Throughout the 1980s, 1990s and into the new millenium Hydro Group has continued to grow, developing its manufacturing facility, products and people with investment into key areas.

In 2010, Hydro Group welcomed Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond to an open day at the company’s new £4.2m research, design and engineering facility at Aberdeen Science and Energy Park. These premises have aided the company’s future development of new products, including those for the renewables sector.

The facility spans a total of 40,000 sq ft, reducing Hydro Group’s carbon footprint by utilising rainwater recovery and heat recirculation. £500,000 has been invested in new equipment for the facility, which includes a purpose-built cable layup machine designed for short power cables mainly for the marine renewables sector.

A further £250,000 investment has been directed towards a new pressure-testing vessel rated to 10,000 PSI.

Staff numbers have grown over the years, from just five in 1982 to over 75 at the new headquarters in Aberdeen. Hydro Group is proud to have achieved the Investors in People award, and the company has Business Partners in a network of regional offices worldwide.

Doug Whyte thanks all staff, customers, suppliers and associates for their invaluable support over the last 30 years and to look forward to continued success in the future.
